Today, I spent the afternoon naked, lying on a beach in some far-away land, staring up into the bright moon in the sky surrounded by hundreds of brilliantly flashing, mesmerizing lights. To my left was my pregnant girlfriend, lying out nude as well, except for a cute thong to preserve her modesty. Held lightly on my lip was a half-smoked, and thus, half-enjoyed joint stuffed with the finest chronic humanity has been able to cultivate.
This is my Second Life. A place of infinite fantasy. My escape from reality. Escape - let's get that out of the way. Everybody needs to disconnect for a bit, shut down and just drift off into their own inner universe of dreams and fantasies. The incredible randomness of Second Life is something that's stimulating, while still being relaxing.
So, how do you get to a place like this in a video game? What is this vast area of truly unexplored social networking all about? If Twitter, with it's nifty ability of making it stupidly easy to maintain almost-instant contact with an exaggerated amount of people, is the buzz communication tool of the now, Second Life, though far older, has the potential to be the Twitter of the future. Not only can you communicate in SL, but with its deep array of tools, you can show your creativity to others.
SL is all about randomness. I got to the place I'm at by first joinning a random group on some random newb's profile. Another group sent out an advertisement in THAT group, and finally, a joint event with a third group landed me on the nude beach. I now happen to be the member of an exclusive swinger group on Second Life, not indifferent to some secret society of the Real Life. Do I have any sort of actual power by being a member of "Club Elite", as opposed to having joined, say, Yale's Skull & Bones? No, of course not...it's ludicrous to even make the comparison. But in my own little fantasy world...
